Nutrition for Beautiful Skin

Updated: Mar 7, 2020

When your face starts to have a breakout, look dull, etc. most of us think to grab a face mask at the store, or book an appointment with an esthetician. Although, those are important parts of skin health, a lot of people fail to acknowledge that their skin concerns may have something to do with the food they are putting into their body. Generally, our skin tends to be a reflection of our inner health status.

Some things that can cause external skin aging:

Pollution Smoking

Chronic sun exposure Poor sleeping habits

Poor nutrition

A big thing we can focus on is getting the proper nutrients to help our skin look its best. So below I will explain some important nutrients to get your skin in check.

Antioxidant rich foods:

Blueberries Spinach Kale

Strawberries Goji berries Pecans

Dark chocolate Raspberries Beans

This will fight off the free radicals that we can accumulate from environmental stressors and pollutants

Omega 3 rich foods:

Salmon Caviar Flax seeds

Walnuts Oysters Soybeans

Sardines Anchovies Chia seeds

Omega 3’s have lots of anti-inflammatory properties to help with redness and acne prone skin. It also helps keep your skin hydrated.

Vitamin C rich foods:

Citrus fruits Rosehip Chili pepper

Black currants Guava Parsley

This is arguably the most important antioxidant for your skin. Vitamin C is a cofactor for other substances (lysyl and prolyl hydroxylase) which stabilize the structure of collagen. Topical products that have vitamin c ingredients added are not as beneficial for your skin as taking it in orally. The products may say that vitamin C is added, but it may not necessarily be the active form of it.

Vitamin E rich foods:

Wheat germ oil Sunflower seeds Abalone

Almonds Hazelnuts Pine nuts

Salmon Avocado Red bell pepper

Mango Kiwi Lobster

Regular intake of natural vitamin E products helps against collagen cross linking which is linked to aging of the skin. The combination of vitamin C and vitamin E have shown dramatic effects on skin health.

These are just some of the foods to incorporate to your diet to help your skin! We will talk about other foods in upcoming articles.
