DON'T LET THE MENU SCARE YOU | eatswithalex

Sometimes when we are on a journey to become healthier, going to restaurants can be intimidating. Below we will talk about 5 tips that you can use to stay on track even when eating out.

1. Choose the grilled chicken over crispy chicken:

It sounds like a silly common sense tip, but the difference between grilled chicken and crispy chicken is a huge factor.

2. Choose salmon if you like fish!

Salmon is high in omega 3's and a great choice at a restaurant. You can even go a step further if you feel like you can and ask for no sauce on top!

3. Choose your sides wisely.

Do not think that you need to get double vegetable as your side every time you go out to eat, that is just miserable. But try doing one side of vegetable (or side salad) and a baked potato (not loaded). Or one side of vegetable and rice. That keeps your meal nice and balanced while not overloaded on calories.

4. Do not feel like you need to eat the entire dish at once.

A lot of the time restaurants portion sizes are 2 or even 3 times the amount we would normally eat. Be mindful when eating, and keep in mind that it is totally okay to not finish your meal in one sitting. Leftovers are great.

5. Choose your beverage wisely.

Water with lemon is a great choice when eating out. Staying hydrated, since most of the time the sodium level is much higher when eating out. Plus, it makes no sense to be drinking your calories. I would suggest to stay away from the overly sugary drinks if possible.

Last little note I am going to add is, if you are going out as a celebration...enjoy the celebration. If you do not go out to eat often, and you are really going as a treat, then enjoy it. It is all about balance, so if you go all out for a birthday celebration, it is okay. Do not feel guilty about it, tomorrow is a new day and you will get back on track the next day! One bad meal is not going to make you lose all the progress you have made!
